Why coastal carpet goes flat
Sand does the damage.
Sand does not sit on top of a carpet. It works down to the base of the pile, and from there every footstep grinds it against the fibres. That is what dulls the colour and flattens the traffic lanes long before the carpet is actually worn out.
A vacuum lifts what is on the surface. Hot water extraction from a truck-mounted machine flushes the rest back up and takes it away, which is the difference between a carpet that looks cleaner and a carpet that is clean.

A holiday place has a narrow window between one family leaving and the next arriving. Because the machine is on the truck and not in the laundry, far more water comes back out of the carpet, so the house is not still damp when the keys are handed over.
